A couple of weeks ago, I posted my Top 10 Ways to Keep Kids Reading and Writing this summer for the Kid Blogger Network School’s Out Series. In it, I mentioned encouraging kids to keep a summer journal to record their memories and adventures. Well, that idea metamorphasized into something bigger {plus, I found some really cute summer ABC clip art that I just had to use}. I’m calling it My ABC’s of Summer.
This idea is similar to the My ABC’s of Thanksgiving I created back in November {also a FREE download}. I had such a great response in November, I thought it would be fun to apply it to summer writing. The idea is that the child uses the ABC pages to write down summer adventures that correspond with each letter of the alphabet. For example: A is for Aquarium or W is for Water park. {The same activity has been adapted for both preschoolers and primary-age kids.}
Variation: If you’re a classroom teacher, divide up the letters at the beginning of next school year among the students in your classroom. Each child writes for their letter and shares with the class {a fun way to get to know each other}. Compile it as a classroom book and display for kids to read and re-read. Skip the harder letters or you can do those {with a little creativity}. Double up on a couple of letters, too.
