Here is our week of Y is for Yarn. I am really proud of how NJoy is getting his letter sounds! I saved Y to be one of our last letters because early letter learners tend to confuse the sound of Y and think it makes the /w/ sound. And why not? Its name, “why”, starts with the /w/ sound!

He colored each page with a marker (I gave him the option of yellow do-a-dot paint, marker, colored pencil, or crayon and he chose marker). He really has begun to enjoy coloring more just lately, which has widened the pallet of things I can have him do. Yay!

I also made another FREE DOWNLOAD: What is Yellow? emergent reader, but we didn’t do this one…just thought I’d go ahead and make it while the idea was fresh. If there’s enough interest, I may make one of these books for each of the colors.
Yarn Fun
FREE DOWNLOAD The Colors of Yarn Book: This took almost all week to complete, but his eyes lit up every time I brought it out. I found the different colors of yarn I had stashed in the attic and cut each one into a few small strips.
He put glue on the page
and glued on the matching colors of yarn to make a book. Once the glue dried, I cut off the excess yarn. Yes, his book is bulky, but he loves to look at it and read it!
On the same download, you’ll also find another emergent reader; which, again, we didn’t use, but thought I’d go ahead and make.
Yarn Puzzle: this is the FIRST time he’s been able to do one of these 6-piece puzzles completely by himself. I was so proud! I would suggest that if your child cannot do them independently, print off two copies: one as a base that you don’t cut apart and the other to cut for puzzle pieces. I wish I’d done this earlier on when he struggled with these.
Yarn Shape Puzzles: He matched them up, then told me what shape he made.

As long as she has the do-a-dot paint or markers in hand, she’s a happy girl. Beware if she doesn’t!!
At the end of our week, we hung up a yellow yarn picture above the letter Y on NJoy’s Picture Word Wall.
